What Separates Canvas From Paper

A paper print wants a frame and usually glass. A canvas stands on its own. The canvas is hand-stretched around a frame 3.8 cm deep, the corners folded clean, and the satin-matte surface cuts glare from windows and lamps. It arrives ready to hang straight out of the box, with no frame to buy and no mounting to do. Printing is giclée with archival pigment inks, the gallery standard, which keeps the colour deep for decades. If you'd rather have paper and a frame, the same artists are in posters and prints.

Finding the Right Subject and the Right Room
The depth of the canvas means it carries large surfaces well. A single piece above the sofa in the living room holds its own without company, while calmer subjects work better in the bedroom. If you're after something specific, there are abstract canvas, pop art on canvas and black and white as separate selections.

Do I need a frame for a canvas?
No. The canvas is hand-stretched over a hardwood frame 3.8 cm deep and arrives ready to hang. That makes canvas easier to get on the wall than a paper print, where the frame is a separate choice and a separate purchase.

How high should a piece hang?
For a single piece, the rule of thumb is the centre of the image around 145 cm above the floor, which is eye level for most people. Above a sofa or a dresser, work from the furniture instead and leave 15 to 20 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

What size should I choose?
Use the two-thirds rule: the piece should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. A 180 cm sofa takes something around 120 cm wide, whether that's one piece or a pair hung close together.

Will the canvas reflect?
The surface is satin-matte specifically to counter glare, which means a piece can hang opposite a window without the image disappearing into the light. That's the biggest practical difference from a glazed print, where the glass mirrors both windows and lamps.

How do I clean a canvas?

Wipe it with a dry, soft brush or a microfibre cloth, always in light strokes and never wet. Water and cleaning products can affect the print and slacken the canvas. Dust settles more slowly on canvas than on glass, so cleaning is rarely needed.

Are the same subjects available on paper?
Many subjects exist in both formats. Paper prints are made on acid-free, age-resistant FSC-certified paper and suit you if you want to choose your own frame, while canvas suits you if you want to hang straight away without either frame or glass.
